Escaping replaces the five characters that HTML treats as markup (&, <, >, " and ') with entities, so user text displays as text instead of being read as tags.
How it works
Escaping these five characters is enough for text placed between tags or inside a quoted attribute. It is not enough inside a script, style or unquoted attribute; use your framework's escaping there.
Unescaping handles numeric entities (é and é) and the most common named ones; the full list of over 2,000 names is on each character's page in the Unicode section.
