Base64 writes any bytes using 64 printable characters (A–Z, a–z, 0–9, + and /), so binary data can travel through systems that only accept text. Every 3 bytes become 4 characters.
How it works
Text is first turned into UTF-8 bytes, then encoded. That is why non-English text and emoji work here, where the browser's plain btoa() would throw an error.
Decoding accepts the URL-safe alphabet too (- and _ instead of + and /) and missing = padding, both common in JWTs and URLs.
Base64 is an encoding, not encryption: anyone can decode it. It also makes data about a third larger.
