Yearly data from 2001 to 2023, from the World Bank.
Tuvalu's reserves and related items (current US$, BoP) was US$7.9 million in 2023, the latest year in the World Bank's World Development Indicators. That is down 37.5% from US$12.64 million in 2013 (4.59% a year on average, compounded).
| Value | Year | |
|---|---|---|
| Latest | US$7.9 million | 2023 |
| Five years earlier | US$5.92 million | 2018 |
| Ten years earlier | US$12.64 million | 2013 |
| Highest | US$21.27 million | 2021 |
| Lowest | −US$10.23 million | 2022 |
| Average since 2014 | US$6.34 million | 2014–2023 |
| First recorded | −US$4.59 million | 2001 |
Over five years it is up 33.53% from US$5.92 million in 2018 (5.95% a year on average, compounded). Since 2001 it is up 272.23% from −US$4.59 million in 2001.
In 2023, Tuvalu's reserves and related items (current US$, BoP) rose US$18.12 million on 2022 (from −US$10.23 million to US$7.9 million).
Across the 21 yearly changes before that (2002 to 2022), the average change was −US$268,556 and a typical year strayed about US$9.45 million from that (the standard deviation). This year's change was 1.9 standard deviations above that average, so it was larger than a typical year, though not out of the range seen before.
On record, the biggest yearly rise was US$18.12 million in 2023 and the biggest yearly fall was US$31.5 million in 2022. The numbers show how large and when, not why; for the cause, look at what happened in that country in those years.
From 2014 to 2023 there is no clear straight-line trend: a straight line explains 4% of the movement over 10 observed years, so the value is moving around more than it is heading anywhere.
Worked out from the yearly values above. How the checks work: standard deviation, z-scores and straight-line trends.
In 2023, Tuvalu had the 4th highest value of the 11 economies reporting that year. Higher is not always better: for some indicators the lowest value is the one to aim for. See the full ranking.
Reserves and related items is the net change in a country's holdings of international reserves resulting from transactions on the current, capital, and financial accounts. Reserve assets are external assets, including monetary gold, that are readily available to and controlled by monetary authorities for meeting balance of payments financing needs, for intervention in exchange markets to affect the currency exchange rate, and for other related purposes (such as maintaining confidence in the currency and the economy, and serving as a basis for foreign borrowing). Reserve assets must be denominated and settled in foreign currency. Also included are net credit and loans from the IMF (excluding reserve position) and total exceptional financing. This indicator is expressed in current prices, meaning no adjustment has been made to account for price changes over time. This indicator is expressed in United States dollars.
