Key figures
| Value | Year | |
|---|---|---|
| Latest | 1.08 | 2017 |
| Highest | 1.08 | 2017 |
| Lowest | 0.44 | 1976 |
| Average since 2016 | 1.06 | 2016–2017 |
| First recorded | 0.52 | 1970 |
Since 1970 it is up 105.5% from 0.52 in 1970 (1.54% a year on average, compounded). The World Bank has no value for 32 of the years in between; the chart leaves those gaps open rather than joining across them.
What the numbers say
In 2017, Peru's school enrollment, tertiary (gross), gender parity index (GPI) rose 0.03 on 2016 (from 1.04 to 1.08).
Across the 11 yearly changes before that (1971 to 2016), the average change was −0.000495 and a typical year strayed about 0.04 from that (the standard deviation). This year's change was 1.0 standard deviations above that average, so it was an ordinary year: it sits within the range of normal year-to-year movement.
On record, the biggest yearly rise was 0.09 in 2002 and the biggest yearly fall was 0.05 in 2004. The numbers show how large and when, not why; for the cause, look at what happened in that country in those years.

What this measures
Gender parity index for gross enrollment ratio in tertiary education is the ratio of women to men enrolled at tertiary level in public and private schools.
Limitations: The gross enrolment ratio is a general measure of participation in tertiary education. However, it does not account for variations in the duration of programs between countries or across different levels of education and fields of study. While it is somewhat standardized by measuring it relative to a 5-year age group for all countries, it may still underestimate participation, particularly in countries with underdeveloped tertiary education systems or where offerings are limited to initial tertiary programs, which are typically shorter than 5 years in duration.
Regional and income-group figures are computed by the World Bank as a weighted average.
