Key figures
| Value | Year | |
|---|---|---|
| Latest | 463.81 billion | 2019 |
| Five years earlier | 495.6 billion | 2014 |
| Highest | 495.6 billion | 2014 |
| Lowest | 194 million | 1973 |
| Average since 2012 | 424.21 billion | 2012–2019 |
| First recorded | 194 million | 1973 |
Over five years it is down 6.41% from 495.6 billion in 2014 (1.32% a year on average, compounded). Since 1973 it is up 238,979% from 194 million in 1973 (18.43% a year on average, compounded). The World Bank has no value for 6 of the years in between; the chart leaves those gaps open rather than joining across them.
What the numbers say
In 2019, Myanmar's taxes on international trade (current LCU) rose 74.6% on 2018 (from 265.7 billion to 463.81 billion).
Across the 30 yearly changes before that (1982 to 2018), the average change was +18% and a typical year strayed about 70.9% from that (the standard deviation). This year's change was 0.8 standard deviations above that average, so it was an ordinary year: it sits within the range of normal year-to-year movement.
On record, the biggest yearly rise was 369.6% in 2004 and the biggest yearly fall was 45.8% in 2018. The numbers show how large and when, not why; for the cause, look at what happened in that country in those years.
From 2012 to 2019 there is no clear straight-line trend: a straight line explains less than 1% of the movement over 8 observed years, so the value is moving around more than it is heading anywhere.

What this measures
Taxes on international trade are taxes that become payable when goods cross the national or customs frontiers of the economic territory or when transactions in services exchange between residents and non-residents. This indicator is expressed in current prices, meaning no adjustment has been made to account for price changes over time. This series is expressed in local currency units.
Limitations: For most countries central government finance data have been consolidated into one account, but for others only budgetary central government accounts are available. Countries reporting budgetary data are noted in the country metadata. Because budgetary accounts may not include all central government units (such as social security funds), they usually provide an incomplete picture. In federal states the central government accounts provide an incomplete view of total public finance. Data on government revenue and expense are collected by the IMF through questionnaires to member countries and by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
