What the numbers say
In 2015, Euro area's stocks traded, total value (current US$) fell 38.3% on 2014 (from US$6.2 trillion to US$3.82 trillion).
Across the 30 yearly changes before that (1985 to 2014), the average change was +26.1% and a typical year strayed about 52.5% from that (the standard deviation). This year's change was 1.2 standard deviations below that average, so it was larger than a typical year, though not out of the range seen before.
On record, the biggest yearly rise was 170.7% in 1985 and the biggest yearly fall was 45.2% in 2009. The numbers show how large and when, not why; for the cause, look at what happened in that country in those years.
From 2006 to 2015 the straight-line trend is downward, about US$729.34 billion a year. A straight line explains 56% of the movement over 10 observed years.

What this measures
The value of shares traded is the total number of shares traded, both domestic and foreign, multiplied by their respective matching prices. Figures are single counted (only one side of the transaction is considered). Companies admitted to listing and admitted to trading are included in the data. Data are end of year values converted to U.S. dollars using corresponding year-end foreign exchange rates.
Limitations: Data cover measures of size (market capitalization, number of listed domestic companies) and liquidity (value of shares traded as a percentage of gross domestic product, value of shares traded as a percentage of market capitalization). The comparability of such data across countries may be limited by conceptual and statistical weaknesses, such as inaccurate reporting and differences in accounting standards. Only EOB trades are included in the total value of shares traded.
Regional and income-group figures are computed by the World Bank as a sum.
