1 kilobyte (kB) = 8,000 bits (bit). To convert, multiply by 8,000: bit = kB × 8,000. For example, 5 kB = 40,000 bit.
bit = kB × 8,000

The two units
Kilobyte (kB). 1,000 bytes in the SI sense. Some software uses "KB" for 1,024 bytes, which is properly a kibibyte (KiB).
Bit (bit). A single binary digit, 0 or 1. Network speeds are quoted in bits per second.
Because both units are defined in terms of the same base unit, the factor 8,000 is exact, not a rounded measurement.

Questions people ask
- How many bits are in a kilobyte?
- 8,000, exactly.
- How do you convert kilobytes to bits?
- bit = kB × 8,000. It is the same as dividing by 0.000125.
- How do you convert bits back to kilobytes?
- kB = bit ÷ 8,000. See bits to kilobytes.
