What the numbers say
In 2021, Viet Nam's adjusted savings, particulate emission damage (current US$) rose 6.7% on 2020 (from US$1.08 billion to US$1.15 billion).
Across the 30 yearly changes before that (1991 to 2020), the average change was +11.2% and a typical year strayed about 11.6% from that (the standard deviation). This year's change was 0.4 standard deviations below that average, so it was an ordinary year: it sits within the range of normal year-to-year movement.
On record, the biggest yearly rise was 43.2% in 2010 and the biggest yearly fall was 6.2% in 1992. The numbers show how large and when, not why; for the cause, look at what happened in that country in those years.
From 2012 to 2021 the straight-line trend is upward, about US$44.75 million a year. A straight line explains 98% of the movement over 10 observed years.

A straight-line projection, tested first
Extending that straight line gives about US$1.28 billion for 2024. We show this only because the same method, fitted on earlier years, predicted 2019 to 2021 better than "no change" would have: its average miss was US$52.08 million, against US$124.39 million for assuming no change. Treat it as a continuation of the recent pattern, not a forecast of events: it cannot see a recession, a policy change or a revision to the data.

How it compares
In 2021, Viet Nam had the 25th highest value of the 164 economies reporting that year. Higher is not always better: for some indicators the lowest value is the one to aim for. See the full ranking.

What this measures
Particulate emissions damage is the damage due to exposure of a country's population to ambient concentrations of particulates measuring less than 2.5 microns in diameter (PM2.5), ambient ozone pollution, and indoor concentrations of PM2.5 in households cooking with solid fuels. Damages are calculated as foregone labor income due to premature death. Estimates of health impacts from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2013 are for 1990, 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010, and 2013. Data for other years have been extrapolated from trends in mortality rates. This indicator is expressed in current prices, meaning no adjustment has been made to account for price changes over time. This indicator is expressed in United States dollars.
