What the numbers say
In 2021, United States' gross Value Added (GVA) at basic prices (current LCU) rose 10.5% on 2020 (from 20.34 trillion to 22.49 trillion).
Across the 30 yearly changes before that (1991 to 2020), the average change was +4.4% and a typical year strayed about 2.2% from that (the standard deviation). This year's change was 2.7 standard deviations above that average, so it was unusually large compared with the rest of the record.
On record, the biggest yearly rise was 13.5% in 1978 and the biggest yearly fall was 1.7% in 2009. The numbers show how large and when, not why; for the cause, look at what happened in that country in those years.
From 2012 to 2021 the straight-line trend is upward, about 702.13 billion a year. A straight line explains 97% of the movement over 10 observed years.
Worked out from the yearly values above. How the checks work: standard deviation, z-scores and straight-line trends.
A straight-line projection, tested first
Extending that straight line gives about 23.74 trillion for 2024. We show this only because the same method, fitted on earlier years, predicted 2019 to 2021 better than "no change" would have: its average miss was 755.29 billion, against 1.37 trillion for assuming no change. Treat it as a continuation of the recent pattern, not a forecast of events: it cannot see a recession, a policy change or a revision to the data.
