Key figures
| Value | Year | |
|---|---|---|
| Latest | US$406.6 million | 2020 |
| Five years earlier | US$2.2 billion | 2015 |
| Highest | US$2.56 billion | 2014 |
| Lowest | US$311 million | 2013 |
| Average since 2012 | US$1.67 billion | 2012–2020 |
| First recorded | US$1.48 billion | 1995 |
Over five years it is down 81.48% from US$2.2 billion in 2015 (28.63% a year on average, compounded). Since 1995 it is down 72.47% from US$1.48 billion in 1995 (5.03% a year on average, compounded). The World Bank has no value for 7 of the years in between; the chart leaves those gaps open rather than joining across them.
What the numbers say
In 2020, Netherlands' international tourism, expenditures for passenger transport items (current US$) fell 80.3% on 2019 (from US$2.07 billion to US$406.6 million).
Across the 16 yearly changes before that (1996 to 2019), the average change was +39.9% and a typical year strayed about 183.2% from that (the standard deviation). This year's change was 0.7 standard deviations below that average, so it was an ordinary year: it sits within the range of normal year-to-year movement.
On record, the biggest yearly rise was 724.1% in 2014 and the biggest yearly fall was 80.3% in 2020. The numbers show how large and when, not why; for the cause, look at what happened in that country in those years.
From 2012 to 2020 there is no clear straight-line trend: a straight line explains 7% of the movement over 9 observed years, so the value is moving around more than it is heading anywhere.

What this measures
International tourism expenditures for passenger transport items are expenditures of international outbound visitors in other countries for all services provided during international transportation by nonresident carriers. Also included are passenger services performed within an economy by nonresident carriers. Excluded are passenger services provided to nonresidents by resident carriers within the resident economies; these are included in travel items. In addition to the services covered by passenger fares--including fares that are a part of package tours but excluding cruise fares, which are included in travel--passenger services include such items as charges for excess baggage, vehicles, or other personal accompanying effects and expenditures for food, drink, or other items for which passengers make expenditures while on board carriers. Data are in current U.S. dollars.
Regional and income-group figures are computed by the World Bank as a gap-filled total.
