Yearly data from 2002 to 2022, from the World Bank.
Kuwait's tariff rate, applied, simple mean, primary products (%) was 4.39% in 2022, the latest year in the World Bank's World Development Indicators. That is up 0.72 percentage points from 3.67% in 2012.
| Value | Year | |
|---|---|---|
| Latest | 4.39% | 2022 |
| Five years earlier | 3.42% | 2017 |
| Ten years earlier | 3.67% | 2012 |
| Highest | 5.38% | 2013 |
| Lowest | 1.2% | 2002 |
| Average since 2013 | 3.66% | 2013–2022 |
| First recorded | 1.2% | 2002 |
Over five years it is up 0.97 percentage points from 3.42% in 2017. Since 2002 it is up 3.19 percentage points from 1.2% in 2002.
In 2022, Kuwait's tariff rate, applied, simple mean, primary products (%) rose 0.95 percentage points on 2021 (from 3.44% to 4.39%).
Across the 19 yearly changes before that (2003 to 2021), the average change was +0.12 percentage points and a typical year strayed about 1.03 percentage points from that (the standard deviation). This year's change was 0.8 standard deviations above that average, so it was an ordinary year: it sits within the range of normal year-to-year movement.
On record, the biggest yearly rise was 2.92 percentage points in 2003 and the biggest yearly fall was 2.07 percentage points in 2014. The numbers show how large and when, not why; for the cause, look at what happened in that country in those years.
From 2013 to 2022 there is no clear straight-line trend: a straight line explains 4% of the movement over 10 observed years, so the value is moving around more than it is heading anywhere.
Worked out from the yearly values above. How the checks work: standard deviation, z-scores and straight-line trends.
In 2022, Kuwait had the 83rd highest value of the 139 economies reporting that year. Higher is not always better: for some indicators the lowest value is the one to aim for. See the full ranking.
Simple mean applied tariff is the unweighted average of effectively applied rates for all products subject to tariffs calculated for all traded goods. Data are classified using the Harmonized System of trade at the six- or eight-digit level. Tariff line data were matched to Standard International Trade Classification (SITC) revision 3 codes to define commodity groups. Effectively applied tariff rates at the six- and eight-digit product level are averaged for products in each commodity group. When the effectively applied rate is unavailable, the most favored nation rate is used instead. To the extent possible, specific rates have been converted to their ad valorem equivalent rates and have been included in the calculation of simple mean tariffs. Primary products are commodities classified in SITC revision 3 sections 0-4 plus division 68 (nonferrous metals).
