Key figures
| Value | Year | |
|---|---|---|
| Latest | 24.26 | 2018 |
| Five years earlier | 23.3 | 2013 |
| Highest | 38.2 | 1974 |
| Lowest | 21.9 | 2011 |
| Average since 2009 | 23.61 | 2009–2018 |
| First recorded | 36.98 | 1971 |
Over five years it is up 4.14% from 23.3 in 2013 (0.81% a year on average, compounded). Since 1971 it is down 34.39% from 36.98 in 1971 (0.89% a year on average, compounded). The World Bank has no value for 1 of the years in between; the chart leaves those gaps open rather than joining across them.
What the numbers say
In 2018, Ecuador's pupil-teacher ratio, primary fell 0.22 on 2017 (from 24.48 to 24.26).
Across the 30 yearly changes before that (1986 to 2017), the average change was −0.28 and a typical year strayed about 1.06 from that (the standard deviation). This year's change was 0.1 standard deviations above that average, so it was an ordinary year: it sits within the range of normal year-to-year movement.
On record, the biggest yearly rise was 1.74 in 1979 and the biggest yearly fall was 3.79 in 1994. The numbers show how large and when, not why; for the cause, look at what happened in that country in those years.
From 2009 to 2018 the straight-line trend is upward, about 0.33 a year. A straight line explains 58% of the movement over 10 observed years.

What this measures
Primary school pupil-teacher ratio is the average number of pupils per teacher in primary school.
Limitations: The comparability of pupil-teacher ratios across countries is affected by the definition of teachers and by differences in class size by grade and in the number of hours taught, as well as the different practices countries employ such as part-time teachers, school shifts, and multi-grade classes. Moreover, the underlying enrollment levels are subject to a variety of reporting errors.
Regional and income-group figures are computed by the World Bank as a weighted average.
