What the numbers say
In 2025, Cyprus' bank nonperforming loans to total gross loans (%) fell 2.05 percentage points on 2024 (from 4.18% to 2.13%).
Across the 16 yearly changes before that (2009 to 2024), the average change was +0.04 percentage points and a typical year strayed about 7.71 percentage points from that (the standard deviation). This year's change was 0.3 standard deviations below that average, so it was an ordinary year: it sits within the range of normal year-to-year movement.
On record, the biggest yearly rise was 20.18 percentage points in 2013 and the biggest yearly fall was 11.87 percentage points in 2018. The numbers show how large and when, not why; for the cause, look at what happened in that country in those years.
From 2016 to 2025 the straight-line trend is downward, about 3.65 percentage points a year. A straight line explains 91% of the movement over 10 observed years.

A straight-line projection, tested first
Extending that straight line gives about -16.42% for 2028. We show this only because the same method, fitted on earlier years, predicted 2023 to 2025 better than "no change" would have: its average miss was 0.79%, against 3.52% for assuming no change. Treat it as a continuation of the recent pattern, not a forecast of events: it cannot see a recession, a policy change or a revision to the data.

How it compares
In 2025, Cyprus had the 56th highest value of the 83 economies reporting that year. Higher is not always better: for some indicators the lowest value is the one to aim for. See the full ranking.

What this measures
The indicator measures the proportion of a deposit taker’s loan portfolio that is impaired or at risk of default. It is calculated as the ratio of non-performing loans (NPLs) to total gross loans, where NPLs are defined as loans that are past due by 90 days or more or are otherwise considered unlikely to be repaid in full without the realization of collateral. Both non-performing loans and total gross loans should be reported at their gross book value, without deducting for loan-loss provisions or collateral. This indicator provides a key measure of asset quality and potential credit risk in the banking system.
Limitations: Reporting countries compile the data using different methodologies, which may also vary for different points in time for the same country. Users are advised to consult the accompanying metadata on the IMF FSI website (data.imf.org) to conduct more meaningful cross-country comparisons or to assess the evolution of the indicator for any of the countries.
Regional and income-group figures are computed by the World Bank as a ratio of non-performing/total loan portfolio.
