Australia's liner shipping connectivity index (maximum value in 2004 = 100) was 35.74 in 2021, the latest year in the World Bank's World Development Indicators. That is up 21.95% from 29.31 in 2011 (2% a year on average, compounded).

What the numbers say
In 2021, Australia's liner shipping connectivity index (maximum value in 2004 = 100) fell 1.5 on 2020 (from 37.24 to 35.74).
Across the 14 yearly changes before that (2007 to 2020), the average change was +0.79 and a typical year strayed about 1.42 from that (the standard deviation). This year's change was 1.6 standard deviations below that average, so it was larger than a typical year, though not out of the range seen before.
On record, the biggest yearly rise was 2.37 in 2014 and the biggest yearly fall was 1.65 in 2017. The numbers show how large and when, not why; for the cause, look at what happened in that country in those years.
From 2012 to 2021 the straight-line trend is upward, about 0.72 a year. A straight line explains 81% of the movement over 10 observed years.

A straight-line projection, tested first
Extending that straight line gives about 38.52 for 2024. We show this only because the same method, fitted on earlier years, predicted 2019 to 2021 better than "no change" would have: its average miss was 1.04, against 2.05 for assuming no change. Treat it as a continuation of the recent pattern, not a forecast of events: it cannot see a recession, a policy change or a revision to the data.

How it compares
In 2021, Australia had the 48th highest value of the 164 economies reporting that year. Higher is not always better: for some indicators the lowest value is the one to aim for. See the full ranking.

What this measures
The Liner Shipping Connectivity Index captures how well countries are connected to global shipping networks. It is computed by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) based on five components of the maritime transport sector: number of ships, their container-carrying capacity, maximum vessel size, number of services, and number of companies that deploy container ships in a country's ports. For each component a country's value is divided by the maximum value of each component in 2004, the five components are averaged for each country, and the average is divided by the maximum average for 2004 and multiplied by 100. The index generates a value of 100 for the country with the highest average index in 2004. . The underlying data come from Containerisation International Online.
Limitations: Data on trade facilitation are drawn from research by private and international agencies. Most data are perception-based evaluations by business executives and professionals. Because of different backgrounds, values, and personalities, those surveyed may evaluate the same situation differently. Caution should thus be used when interpreting perception- based indicators. Nevertheless, they convey much needed information on trade facilitation.
