Average discount per order is the total value of discounts and coupons given in a period divided by the number of orders, including orders that had no discount.
Average discount per order = Total discounts given ÷ Number of orders
On the sample data below, six months come to ₹45.95.
Why it matters
Discounts are a cost that never shows up as a bill. Tracking them per order makes it obvious when a coupon code has leaked to a deals site or a promotion ran longer than planned.
Worked example
The table shows the columns this metric needs from six months of a made-up subscription brand. Add each column up over the six months, then put the totals into the formula:
| Month | Discounts given | Orders |
|---|---|---|
| 2026-01 | ₹31,000 | 702 |
| 2026-02 | ₹35,200 | 748 |
| 2026-03 | ₹29,800 | 812 |
| 2026-04 | ₹41,500 | 771 |
| 2026-05 | ₹38,800 | 846 |
| 2026-06 | ₹44,100 | 917 |
| Total | ₹2,20,400 | 4,796 |
₹2,20,400 ÷ 4,796 = ₹45.95
Add up first, then divide. Averaging the six monthly figures gives a slightly different answer, because it counts a small month the same as a large one.
Month by month
| Month | Average discount per order |
|---|---|
| 2026-01 | ₹44.16 |
| 2026-02 | ₹47.06 |
| 2026-03 | ₹36.70 |
| 2026-04 | ₹53.83 |
| 2026-05 | ₹45.86 |
| 2026-06 | ₹48.09 |
Average discount per order calculator
How to read it
Pair it with discount rate. Discount per order says how much each order costs you in discounts; discount rate says what share of gross sales you gave away.
Common mistakes
- Decide whether free shipping counts as a discount. Either is fine; switching between them is not.
- Divide by all orders, not only discounted orders, unless you mean "average discount when a discount is used", which is a different metric.
- Store credit and loyalty points redeemed are discounts too, even when your platform reports them as a payment method.
Calculate average discount per order in Excel, SQL or Python
The quickest version, for the sample sheet laid out as in the CSV (headers in row 1, months in rows 2 to 7):
=SUM(D2:D7) / SUM(N2:N7)- Average discount per order in Excel and Google Sheets — per-month formula and zero-safe version
- Average discount per order in SQL — query by month and for the period
- Average discount per order in Python (pandas) — pandas script with expected output

Check how stable it is
A metric moves for ordinary reasons as well as real ones. These methods separate the two: the spread shows what a normal month looks like, the moving average smooths it, the z-score flags a month that is out of line and the trend line shows the direction.

About the data on this page
The figures come from a small made-up dataset, printed above in full so you can check every number by hand. Download it as monthly.csv. The results are computed from those rows when the page is built, and the Excel formulas, SQL and Python on these pages are run against the same rows before publishing, so the code and the answers agree.
