What the numbers say
In 2024, Zimbabwe's general government final consumption expenditure (current LCU) rose 1,136.7% on 2023 (from 8.09 billion to 100 billion).
Across the 30 yearly changes before that (1994 to 2023), the average change was +111.6% and a typical year strayed about 258.4% from that (the standard deviation). This year's change was 4.0 standard deviations above that average, so it was unusually large compared with the rest of the record.
On record, the biggest yearly rise was 1,136.7% in 2024 and the biggest yearly fall was 63.4% in 2006. The numbers show how large and when, not why; for the cause, look at what happened in that country in those years.
From 2015 to 2024 the straight-line trend is upward, about 5.83 billion a year. A straight line explains 32% of the movement over 10 observed years.

What this measures
Final consumption expenditure is expenditure on goods and services by resident institutional units for the direct satisfaction of human needs or wants, whether individual or collective. General government FCE includes all government current expenditures for purchases of goods and services (including compensation of employees), and most expenditures on national defense and security, but excludes government military expenditures that are part of government capital formation. This indicator is expressed in current prices, meaning no adjustment has been made to account for price changes over time. This series is expressed in local currency units.
