Yearly data from 1960 to 2022, from the World Bank.
Tonga's fixed telephone subscriptions was 3,280 in 2022, the latest year in the World Bank's World Development Indicators. That is down 89.07% from 30,000 in 2012 (19.86% a year on average, compounded).
| Value | Year | |
|---|---|---|
| Latest | 3,280 | 2022 |
| Five years earlier | 14,697 | 2017 |
| Ten years earlier | 30,000 | 2012 |
| Highest | 31,000 | 2009 |
| Lowest | 500 | 1976 |
| Average since 2013 | 12,436 | 2013–2022 |
| First recorded | 529 | 1960 |
Over five years it is down 77.68% from 14,697 in 2017 (25.92% a year on average, compounded). Since 1960 it is up 520.04% from 529 in 1960 (2.99% a year on average, compounded). The World Bank has no value for 3 of the years in between; the chart leaves those gaps open rather than joining across them.
In 2022, Tonga's fixed telephone subscriptions fell 69.7% on 2021 (from 10,824 to 3,280).
Across the 30 yearly changes before that (1992 to 2021), the average change was +5.6% and a typical year strayed about 21.9% from that (the standard deviation). This year's change was 3.4 standard deviations below that average, so it was unusually large compared with the rest of the record.
On record, the biggest yearly rise was 80.4% in 1979 and the biggest yearly fall was 69.7% in 2022. The numbers show how large and when, not why; for the cause, look at what happened in that country in those years.
From 2013 to 2022 the straight-line trend is downward, about 1,830 a year. A straight line explains 54% of the movement over 10 observed years.
Worked out from the yearly values above. How the checks work: standard deviation, z-scores and straight-line trends.
In 2022, Tonga had the 37th highest value of the 45 economies reporting that year. Higher is not always better: for some indicators the lowest value is the one to aim for. See the full ranking.

Fixed telephone subscriptions refers to the sum of active number of analogue fixed telephone lines, voice-over-IP (VoIP) subscriptions, fixed wireless local loop (WLL) subscriptions, ISDN voice-channel equivalents and fixed public payphones.
Limitations: Operators have traditionally been the main source of telecommunications data, so information on subscriptions has been widely available for most countries. This gives a general idea of access, but a more precise measure is the penetration rate - the share of households with access to telecommunications. During the past few years more information on information and communication technology use has become available from household and business surveys. Also important are data on actual use of telecommunications services. Ideally, statistics on telecommunications (and other information and communications technologies) should be compiled for all three measures: subscriptions, access, and use.
Regional and income-group figures are computed by the World Bank as a sum.
