Yearly data from 1970 to 2024, from the World Bank.
Netherlands's nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from Industrial Processes (Mt CO2e) was 1.46 in 2024, the latest year in the World Bank's World Development Indicators. That is down 10.32% from 1.63 in 2014 (1.08% a year on average, compounded).
| Value | Year | |
|---|---|---|
| Latest | 1.46 | 2024 |
| Five years earlier | 1.59 | 2019 |
| Ten years earlier | 1.63 | 2014 |
| Highest | 9.36 | 1974 |
| Lowest | 1.46 | 2024 |
| Average since 2015 | 1.58 | 2015–2024 |
| First recorded | 7.65 | 1970 |
Over five years it is down 7.84% from 1.59 in 2019 (1.62% a year on average, compounded). Since 1970 it is down 80.91% from 7.65 in 1970 (3.02% a year on average, compounded).
In 2024, Netherlands' nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from Industrial Processes (Mt CO2e) fell 4% on 2023 (from 1.52 to 1.46).
Across the 30 yearly changes before that (1994 to 2023), the average change was −1.7% and a typical year strayed about 16.5% from that (the standard deviation). This year's change was 0.1 standard deviations below that average, so it was an ordinary year: it sits within the range of normal year-to-year movement.
On record, the biggest yearly rise was 31.8% in 2006 and the biggest yearly fall was 76.5% in 2008. The numbers show how large and when, not why; for the cause, look at what happened in that country in those years.
From 2015 to 2024 the straight-line trend is downward, about 0.01 a year. A straight line explains 50% of the movement over 10 observed years.
Worked out from the yearly values above. How the checks work: standard deviation, z-scores and straight-line trends.
In 2024, Netherlands had the 42nd highest value of the 203 economies reporting that year. Higher is not always better: for some indicators the lowest value is the one to aim for. See the full ranking.

A measure of annual emissions of nitrous oxide (N2O), one of the six Kyoto greenhouse gases (GHG), from industrial processes including IPCC 2006 codes 2.A.1 Cement production, 2.A.2 Lime production, 2.A.3 Glass Production, 2.A.4 Other Process Uses of Carbonates, 2.B Chemical Industry, 2.C Metal Industry, 2.D Non-Energy Products from Fuels and Solvent Use, 2.E Electronics Industry, 2.F Product Uses as Substitutes for Ozone Depleting Substances, 2.G Other Product Manufacture and Use and 5.A Indirect N2O emissions from the atmospheric deposition of nitrogen in NOx and NH3). The measure is standardized to carbon dioxide equivalent values using the Global Warming Potential (GWP) factors of IPCC's 5th Assessment Report (AR5).
Limitations: Global GHG emissions are currently not directly measurable, but approaches for their estimation exist, and numerous sources exist to supply data for this indicator. Reputable scientific organizations produce these data for use for research, policy analysis, climate negotiations, and broader public communications. The estimated accuracy from fossil fuel combustion and industrial processes are quite high, as quantities of fossil fuels and other emissive materials (such as cement and steel) produced are well known. For these sectors, emissions estimates are roughly accurate to within 10% when aggregated to the global level and between 4% and 35% at the country level (Crippa et al., 2023).
Regional and income-group figures are computed by the World Bank as a sum.
