Key figures
| Value | Year | |
|---|---|---|
| Latest | 60.22 billion | 2024 |
| Five years earlier | 29.7 billion | 2019 |
| Highest | 60.22 billion | 2024 |
| Lowest | 2.67 billion | 2010 |
| Average since 2016 | 32.55 billion | 2016–2024 |
| First recorded | 2.67 billion | 2010 |
Over five years it is up 102.73% from 29.7 billion in 2019 (15.18% a year on average, compounded). Since 2010 it is up 2,153% from 2.67 billion in 2010 (24.92% a year on average, compounded). The World Bank has no value for 3 of the years in between; the chart leaves those gaps open rather than joining across them.
What the numbers say
In 2024, Mozambique's interest payments (current LCU) rose 16.8% on 2023 (from 51.55 billion to 60.22 billion).
Across the 9 yearly changes before that (2011 to 2023), the average change was +20.8% and a typical year strayed about 20.2% from that (the standard deviation). This year's change was 0.2 standard deviations below that average, so it was an ordinary year: it sits within the range of normal year-to-year movement.
On record, the biggest yearly rise was 50.5% in 2018 and the biggest yearly fall was 7.8% in 2020. The numbers show how large and when, not why; for the cause, look at what happened in that country in those years.
From 2016 to 2024 the straight-line trend is upward, about 4.83 billion a year. A straight line explains 82% of the movement over 9 observed years.

What this measures
Interest payments include interest payments on government debt (including long-term bonds, long-term loans, and other debt instruments) to domestic and foreign residents. This indicator is expressed in current prices, meaning no adjustment has been made to account for price changes over time. This series is expressed in local currency units.
Limitations: For most countries central government finance data have been consolidated into one account, but for others only budgetary central government accounts are available. Countries reporting budgetary data are noted in the country metadata. Because budgetary accounts may not include all central government units (such as social security funds), they usually provide an incomplete picture. In federal states the central government accounts provide an incomplete view of total public finance. Data on government revenue and expense are collected by the IMF through questionnaires to member countries and by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
