Ireland's industrial design applications, resident, by count was 80 in 2024, the latest year in the World Bank's World Development Indicators. That is down 23.81% from 105 in 2019 (5.29% a year on average, compounded).
Key figures
| Value | Year | |
|---|---|---|
| Latest | 80 | 2024 |
| Five years earlier | 105 | 2019 |
| Highest | 234 | 2020 |
| Lowest | 77 | 2022 |
| Average since 2015 | 113.8 | 2015–2024 |
| First recorded | 107 | 2008 |
Over five years it is down 23.81% from 105 in 2019 (5.29% a year on average, compounded). Since 2008 it is down 25.23% from 107 in 2008 (1.8% a year on average, compounded). The World Bank has no value for 5 of the years in between; the chart leaves those gaps open rather than joining across them.
What the numbers say
In 2024, Ireland's industrial design applications, resident, by count fell 17.5% on 2023 (from 97 to 80).
Across the 8 yearly changes before that (2016 to 2023), the average change was +8.6% and a typical year strayed about 53.9% from that (the standard deviation). This year's change was 0.5 standard deviations below that average, so it was an ordinary year: it sits within the range of normal year-to-year movement.
On record, the biggest yearly rise was 122.9% in 2020 and the biggest yearly fall was 59.4% in 2021. The numbers show how large and when, not why; for the cause, look at what happened in that country in those years.
From 2015 to 2024 there is no clear straight-line trend: a straight line explains 6% of the movement over 10 observed years, so the value is moving around more than it is heading anywhere.

What this measures
Industrial design applications are applications to register an industrial design with a national or regional Intellectual Property (IP) offices and designations received by relevant offices through the Hague System. A resident application refers to an application filed with the IP office of, or acting for, the state or jurisdiction in which the first named applicant in the application is resident. Design count is used to render application data for industrial applications across offices comparable, as some offices follow a single-class/single-design filing system while others have a multiple class/design filing system.
Limitations: Data are based on information supplied to World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) by IP offices in annual surveys, supplemented by data in national IP office reports. Data may be missing for some offices or periods.
Regional and income-group figures are computed by the World Bank as a sum.
