What the numbers say
In 2025, India's stocks traded, total value (% of GDP) fell 16.35 percentage points on 2024 (from 89.01% to 72.66%).
Across the 24 yearly changes before that (2001 to 2024), the average change was −0.85 percentage points and a typical year strayed about 18.15 percentage points from that (the standard deviation). This year's change was 0.9 standard deviations below that average, so it was an ordinary year: it sits within the range of normal year-to-year movement.
On record, the biggest yearly rise was 33.45 percentage points in 2024 and the biggest yearly fall was 58.37 percentage points in 2001. The numbers show how large and when, not why; for the cause, look at what happened in that country in those years.
From 2016 to 2025 the straight-line trend is upward, about 4.35 percentage points a year. A straight line explains 60% of the movement over 10 observed years.

What this measures
The value of shares traded is the total number of shares traded, both domestic and foreign, multiplied by their respective matching prices. Figures are single counted (only one side of the transaction is considered). Companies admitted to listing and admitted to trading are included in the data. Data are end of year values.
Limitations: Data cover measures of size (market capitalization, number of listed domestic companies) and liquidity (value of shares traded as a percentage of gross domestic product, value of shares traded as a percentage of market capitalization). The comparability of such data across countries may be limited by conceptual and statistical weaknesses, such as inaccurate reporting and differences in accounting standards. Only EOB trades are included in the total value of shares traded.
Regional and income-group figures are computed by the World Bank as a weighted average.
