What the numbers say
In 2025, Canada's import unit value index (2015 = 100) rose 0.7 on 2024 (from 117.1 to 117.8).
Across the 24 yearly changes before that (2001 to 2024), the average change was +1.38 and a typical year strayed about 5.37 from that (the standard deviation). This year's change was 0.1 standard deviations below that average, so it was an ordinary year: it sits within the range of normal year-to-year movement.
On record, the biggest yearly rise was 10.8 in 2021 and the biggest yearly fall was 10.6 in 2015. The numbers show how large and when, not why; for the cause, look at what happened in that country in those years.
From 2016 to 2025 the straight-line trend is upward, about 2.89 a year. A straight line explains 84% of the movement over 10 observed years.

What this measures
Import unit value indices come from UNCTAD's trade database. Unit value indices are based on data reported by countries that demonstrate consistency under UNCTAD quality controls, supplemented by UNCTAD’s estimates using the previous year’s trade values at the Standard International Trade Classification three-digit level as weights. To improve data coverage, especially for the latest periods, UNCTAD constructs a set of average prices indexes at the three-digit product classification of the Standard International Trade Classification revision 3 using UNCTAD’s Commodity Price Statistics, international and national sources, and UNCTAD secretariat estimates. This indicator is an index series where 2015=100.
