What the numbers say
In 2024, Brazil's industrial design applications, nonresident, by count rose 69.9% on 2023 (from 2,284 to 3,880).
Across the 30 yearly changes before that (1994 to 2023), the average change was +6.3% and a typical year strayed about 17.2% from that (the standard deviation). This year's change was 3.7 standard deviations above that average, so it was unusually large compared with the rest of the record.
On record, the biggest yearly rise was 16,400% in 1992 and the biggest yearly fall was 97.4% in 1990. The numbers show how large and when, not why; for the cause, look at what happened in that country in those years.
From 2015 to 2024 there is no clear straight-line trend: a straight line explains 2% of the movement over 10 observed years, so the value is moving around more than it is heading anywhere.

What this measures
Industrial design applications are applications to register an industrial design with a national or regional Intellectual Property (IP) offices and designations received by relevant offices through the Hague System. Non-resident application refers to an application filed with the IP office of or acting on behalf of a state or jurisdiction in which the first-named applicant in the application is not domiciled. Design count is used to render application data for industrial applications across offices comparable, as some offices follow a single-class/single-design filing system while other have a multiple class/design filing system.
Limitations: Data are based on information supplied to World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) by IP offices in annual surveys, supplemented by data in national IP office reports. Data may be missing for some offices or periods.
Regional and income-group figures are computed by the World Bank as a sum.
