Yearly data from 1960 to 2023, from the World Bank.
Botswana's net official development assistance received (constant 2023 US$) was US$284.58 million in 2023, the latest year in the World Bank's World Development Indicators. That is up 123.51% from US$127.33 million in 2013 (8.37% a year on average, compounded).
| Value | Year | |
|---|---|---|
| Latest | US$284.58 million | 2023 |
| Five years earlier | US$96.94 million | 2018 |
| Ten years earlier | US$127.33 million | 2013 |
| Highest | US$835.52 million | 2008 |
| Lowest | US$39.43 million | 1960 |
| Average since 2014 | US$116.73 million | 2014–2023 |
| First recorded | US$39.43 million | 1960 |
Over five years it is up 193.58% from US$96.94 million in 2018 (24.03% a year on average, compounded). Since 1960 it is up 621.71% from US$39.43 million in 1960 (3.19% a year on average, compounded).
In 2023, Botswana's net official development assistance received (constant 2023 US$) rose 201.6% on 2022 (from US$94.37 million to US$284.58 million).
Across the 30 yearly changes before that (1993 to 2022), the average change was +16.8% and a typical year strayed about 108.2% from that (the standard deviation). This year's change was 1.7 standard deviations above that average, so it was larger than a typical year, though not out of the range seen before.
On record, the biggest yearly rise was 556.3% in 2008 and the biggest yearly fall was 55.9% in 2009. The numbers show how large and when, not why; for the cause, look at what happened in that country in those years.
From 2014 to 2023 there is no clear straight-line trend: a straight line explains 20% of the movement over 10 observed years, so the value is moving around more than it is heading anywhere.
Worked out from the yearly values above. How the checks work: standard deviation, z-scores and straight-line trends.
In 2023, Botswana had the 84th highest value of the 136 economies reporting that year. Higher is not always better: for some indicators the lowest value is the one to aim for. See the full ranking.

Net official development assistance (ODA) consists of disbursements of loans made on concessional terms (net of repayments of principal) and grants by official agencies of the members of the Development Assistance Committee (DAC), by multilateral institutions, and by non-DAC countries to promote economic development and welfare in countries and territories in the DAC list of ODA recipients. It includes loans with a grant element of at least 25 percent (calculated at a rate of discount of 10 percent). Data are in constant 2023 U.S. dollars.
Regional and income-group figures are computed by the World Bank as a sum.
