What the numbers say
In 2024, Australia's crop production index (2014-2016 = 100) rose 12.99 on 2023 (from 126.75 to 139.74).
Across the 30 yearly changes before that (1994 to 2023), the average change was +2.26 and a typical year strayed about 16.03 from that (the standard deviation). This year's change was 0.7 standard deviations above that average, so it was an ordinary year: it sits within the range of normal year-to-year movement.
On record, the biggest yearly rise was 30.86 in 2020 and the biggest yearly fall was 27.67 in 2023. The numbers show how large and when, not why; for the cause, look at what happened in that country in those years.
From 2015 to 2024 the straight-line trend is upward, about 5.88 a year. A straight line explains 48% of the movement over 10 observed years.

What this measures
Crop production index shows agricultural production for each year relative to the base period 2014-2016. It includes all crops except fodder crops. Regional and income group aggregates for the FAO's production indexes are calculated from the underlying values in international dollars, normalized to the base period 2014-2016.
Limitations: The FAO indices may differ from those produced by the countries themselves because of differences in concepts of production, coverage, time periods, weights, time reference of data, methods of calculation, and use of international prices. Agricultural data are collected by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) from official national sources through annual questionnaires and are supplemented with information from official secondary data sources. The secondary sources cover official country data from websites of national ministries, national publications and related country data reported by various international organizations.
Regional and income-group figures are computed by the World Bank as a weighted average.
