Yearly data from 1960 to 2024, from the World Bank.
Afghanistan's final consumption expenditure (current US$) was US$24.06 billion in 2024, the latest year in the World Bank's World Development Indicators.
| Value | Year | |
|---|---|---|
| Latest | US$24.06 billion | 2024 |
| Highest | US$24.06 billion | 2024 |
| Lowest | US$466.67 million | 1960 |
| Average since 2020 | US$20.06 billion | 2020–2024 |
| First recorded | US$466.67 million | 1960 |
Since 1960 it is up 5,055% from US$466.67 million in 1960 (6.35% a year on average, compounded). The World Bank has no value for 41 of the years in between; the chart leaves those gaps open rather than joining across them.
In 2024, Afghanistan's final consumption expenditure (current US$) rose 17.6% on 2023 (from US$20.46 billion to US$24.06 billion).
Across the 21 yearly changes before that (1961 to 2023), the average change was +10.2% and a typical year strayed about 19.1% from that (the standard deviation). This year's change was 0.4 standard deviations above that average, so it was an ordinary year: it sits within the range of normal year-to-year movement.
On record, the biggest yearly rise was 50.5% in 1963 and the biggest yearly fall was 31.5% in 2021. The numbers show how large and when, not why; for the cause, look at what happened in that country in those years.
Worked out from the yearly values above. How the checks work: standard deviation, z-scores and straight-line trends.
In 2024, Afghanistan had the 16th highest value of the 36 economies reporting that year. Higher is not always better: for some indicators the lowest value is the one to aim for. See the full ranking.

Final consumption expenditure is expenditure on goods and services by resident institutional units for the direct satisfaction of human needs or wants, whether individual or collective. Final consumption expenditure can be measured for households, general government, the central bank and non-profit institutions serving households. This indicator is expressed in current prices, meaning no adjustment has been made to account for price changes over time. This indicator is expressed in United States dollars.
Regional and income-group figures are computed by the World Bank as a gap-filled total.
